Craig Kincaid & Karen Peterson—Featured Artists

Gallery at Marina Square Presents Our Featured Artists for November 2013: “Land, Sea, Sky”

A Featured Artist Reception will be held Friday, November 8th from 5-8pm at Gallery at Marina Square

Craig Kincaid
Craig Kincaid has been looking through a lens since he was 20 years old. Throughout his photography career, he has always tried to capture the light, find the contrasts, and make the ordinary obvious and the perspective unique. Landscapes, shadows, sunrises and sunsets, cloud formations and people provide him with ideas for photographs. Dry vernal pools, lichen, seaweed on a beach, waves breaking on the sand are all wonders that interest him. He marvels at how light creates impressions to delight us all.

Craig specializes in getting into position and choosing the right exposure and lens to expose what he believes is the unique look at the subject. He graduated from USC with a degree in business. He plays music in a band. He travels, hikes, skis, surfs and plays golf. He teaches a film class at the Palm Theatre. He writes songs. If there is art there he is. Craig says, “Make art. Make art. Enjoy art.”

Karen Peterson
Karen Peterson
received her first camera on her ninth birthday and enjoyed taking snapshots of her family on vacations and of friends around her neighborhood. She didn’t consider the artistic aspects of photography until her Dad gave her his old Zeiss Contaflex 35mm SLR when Karen was in her twenties. She began taking the occasional weekend photography seminar (Point Reyes Field Seminars was her favorite location) and joined the Palo Alto Camera Club. Showing and sharing her images with other photographers encouraged her to take her photography in new directions.

Karen began experimenting with Polaroid films, eventually teaching short seminars on Polaroid Image and Emulsion Transfers using Polacolor film. Karen studied traditional black and white darkroom techniques at UC Berkley Extension in San Francisco and hand coloring using Marshall’s Photo Oils. Since moving to the Central Coast in 1999 Karen has been actively involved in the Central Coast Photographic Society and the San Luis Obispo Camera Club, serving terms as President of both organizations. Karen is currently experimenting with various digital techniques including High Dynamic Range (HDR).
