I have always painted for myself. Painting is how I explore the world around me and express how I perceive it. Art and science may seem mutually exclusive in today’s world, but it wasn’t always thus, and I strive to revive art as a scientific instrument. I find painting and drawing to be powerful tools in teaching us to see what’s all around us – through the simple act of following an amazing line or pattern into infinity.

I’ve always viewed my paintings as entries in my journal—part of my reference library that reminds me of where I’ve been and how I’ve seen the world, which often leads to what’s next. I had never considered selling my art—until I discovered giclée reproductions. They can so precisely replicate the original, I feel I have as full-dimensional a “journal entry” as ever.

I judge a painting by its ability to always please me, and, even better, to be an ongoing source of discovery and rediscovery.

I hope this is what you’ll find in my collection of paintings and giclée prints.

Mark Allen’s oil based enamel exhibition “ForesTREE” can be viewed at Gallery at Marina Square throughout the month of October, from the 1st through the 29th.

Gallery at Marina Square Presents Our Featured Artist Exhibit for October 2014: “Off the Road”

Featured Artist Reception will be held Friday, October 10th from 5-8pm at Gallery at Marina Square

I’m lucky, my husband likes to drive and I like to look.  This fortunate circumstance allows me to photograph scenes that appeal to my artistic sense, if I capture it before it flies by my window.  Over the past year I’ve collected a fair amount of images, mostly from the highways and byways of California that have inspired my newest paintings.

This last year I’ve worked with my photos to recreate, in the studio, paintings that capture the beauty of nature.  Often the photos I work from are meant to refresh my memory as I’m not a slave to an image, but rather prefer to give my imagination free reign when I paint, sometimes, using my imagination alone to create paintings.
